Gas Chromatography
Agilent 6890A-5973N, GC-MS
This Agilent GC-MS single quadrupole uses electron impact for ionization. The instrument is fitted with a Gerstel brand autosampler with multi-function capabilities. The autosampler arm can be adjusted for regular needle injection, SPME using the fiber configuration, as well as for membrane or other SPME extraction forms using the thermal desorption unit (TDU). This device, installed onto a cooled injection system (CIS), allows for the desorption of analytes from the extraction material at temperatures up to 300°C, which are then trapped by the CIS using liquid nitrogen. The CIS is then rapidly heated to release all the trapped analytes at once onto the column, resulting in a very sharp injection.

HP 6890 GC 5973 MS
This HP instrument has been a lab workhorse since before HP was purchased by Agilent. The single quadrupole with an electron impact source offers reliable ionization for comparison searches using NIST published libraries.
Fitted with the new PAL robotic tool exchange (RTC) autosampler from CTC Analytics, this system can do nearly anything. The tool exchanger allows for automated changing of sampling style within a single sequence; as an example, it can perform automated sample preparation involving dilutions using the syringe tool, followed by an SPME extraction.

Agilent 7890 GC 5977A MS
This recently purchased GC-MS offers greater sensitivity than those before it. Also a single quadrupole with electron impact, it is one of Agilent’s newest lines of GC-MS products.
Fitted with a Gerstel MPS Robotic Pro, the same TDU and CIS equipment as in the Agilent 6890 are also installed here. With the most recent version of the autosampler, individual tools have been designed for each sampling mode, removing the requirement for the user to manually change the configuration of the sampling head.
