Other important information

Whom to contact

Jenny Rothwell is the PhD program administrative coordinator. She is the main contact person for the program, and knows about important things like getting registered and getting paid.

Offices, printing and photocopying

We provide each student with a desk in a shared office or work area. PhD students may print for free on the school laser printers, and each student has a charge code for photocopying. We ask students to be reasonable and resource-conscious.

Presenting your work at conferences

We encourage PhD students to present their research at conferences. If your research has been accepted for presentation at a peer-reviewed conference, and you will be presenting it, first apply for travel funds from the Graduate Studies Office. If the research is co-authored with a faculty member, often the faculty member will subsidize the student’s travel from a research grant. The school will pay reasonable costs of registration, economy travel and accommodation not covered by other sources.

AAA Doctoral Consortium

The school sends one student annually to the American Accounting Association/Deloitte & Touche/J. Michael Cook Doctoral Consortium in Lake Tahoe, California in June. The AAA and the school cover all costs. We send a student who has completed the comprehensive exams. Consortium policy stipulates that the student should have at least one more year in residence at the doctoral institution.

CAAA PhD Workshop

The Canadian Academic Accounting Association conference is held in late May or early June somewhere in Canada. A full-day PhD Workshop for doctoral students is held the day preceding this conference.

Other conference travel

We provide each in-residence PhD student with $750 of discretionary travel funds, per year completed in the program. The student may spend these funds only after passing the comprehensive exam, and only for legitimate, documented expenses related to attending academic conferences or doctoral consortia that are not covered by another funding source. We make travel funds available to facilitate this goal. Review PhD student travel policy (PDF) for full details.
