Research environment

At Waterloo, we strive to create an outstanding and collegial research environment for our PhD students.

Research internships

Students complete at least six terms of research internship with faculty members in the School of Accounting and Finance. Each internship provides students an opportunity to build their research capabilities and receive mentorship while providing valuable research assistance for their faculty supervisor.

Research seminar series

We hold research seminars that are open to all faculty and PhD students. These seminars provide students with exposure to a wide variety of research questions and methods. They also provide students with the opportunity to meet with faculty from other universities.

See the schedule for the research seminar series.

Brown bags

Brown bags are scheduled to provide faculty and students opportunities to meet to discuss early-stage research projects.  This is a great way to learn about the evolution of research projects.

Opportunities to present to faculty

Students have several opportunities to present their work to the faculty.  They present a summer research paper at the end of the first year, and a thesis proposal within one year of passing the comprehensive exam.  Students are also welcome to present their research at a brown bag.
