Essential skills

Our essential skills courses are online, self-guided, and asynchronous; the courses address the need for 21st century skills, and the ability to apply them in a variety of contexts. More specifically, these courses focus on developing the following essential skills:

  • leadership
  • interpersonal communication
  • presentation
  • teamwork

Together these skills are increasingly important in the global marketplace and within higher education around the world. The course is designed for those entering the workforce and/or newcomers to Canada looking to gain essential skills. 

Each module includes an introduction of key concepts, a quiz of student's comprehension, a closer look at core themes through materials such as videos, an opportunity to reflect and record on learning, and an invitation to further explore the themes beyond the scope of the course through supplementary resources.

ABOUT THE COURSES

Students will be given 3-months of online access to their course materials according to the session they register for (see Upcoming course dates). The course materials will be housed on the online learning management system Canvas. 

Each module is structured as follows

  • an introduction of key concepts
  • a quiz of your comprehension of the key concepts introduced
  • a closer look at core themes through extension materials such as text and video
  • an opportunity to reflect on, and make a record of, on your learning and skills development
  • an invitation to further explore the themes beyond the scope of the course through supplementary resources

TUITION FEES & WITHDRAWAL AND REFUND POLICY

Fees

Tuition: $100.00 CAD (per participant)

+ HST 

PLEASE NOTE: we are also glad to accept group registrations for groups larger than 5 participants. For further information on group pricing and registration, please contact cape@uwaterloo.ca.

Withdrawal and Refund Policy (individual registrants)

  • Students may withdraw from the course up until 11:59PM EST on the registration deadline for their session for a full tuition refund. After this date, refunds will not be issued.

Requests to withdraw should be sent in writing over e-mail to cape@uwaterloo.ca.

HOW TO REGISTER & HOW TO PAY (ES)

Registration (individual registrants)

  • Please complete an online registration form.

Once you have submitted your registration form, you will be contacted with further information about your course including access information and dates.

PLEASE NOTE: we are also glad to accept group registrations for groups larger than 5 participants. For further information on group pricing and registration, please contact cape@uwaterloo.ca.

Payment

You can pay one of the following ways for your non-credit course:

1. Bank Payment

  • Contact cape@uwaterloo.ca for your student ID number.
  • Add Renison University College as a bill payment “payee”.
  • Use your student ID number as the “account number”.  Please be very sure that you are using the correct student ID number.
  • Allow 2-4 business days for your payment to reach Renison University College.
  • If you post-date your payment, we will not be able to process it until the date of the payment. Late fees may apply.

2. Online via our Shopify page.

3. In-person at the Renison English Language Institute (REN 1930) (Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm). Payment methods accepted are: cash, cheque, money order, debit, Visa or MasterCard. 

Note: you must submit payment for your course prior to the course start date. Please also ensure that you submit payment for the administration fee if this is your first non-credit language and culture course at Renison. In the case you do not submit payment, Renison University College will contact you directly.
