Biography and Brief CV

Ian Rowlands is a Professor in the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability at the University of Waterloo (Canada).  Ian has academic interests in sustainable energy transitions, multilevel governance and decision-making, and the internationalization of higher education.

Ian has been at the University of Waterloo for more than 26 years.  He has occupied a number of leadership positions at the unit, faculty, and university levels, including two terms as Waterloo’s Associate Vice-President, International (the university’s Senior International Officer).

Ian has previously worked at the United Nations Collaborating Centre on Energy and Environment, and the London School of Economics and Political Science; he has also held visiting positions at the Association of Commonwealth Universities, The Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, the UK Department for International Development, and the European University Institute.

Ian earned a Ph.D. in International Relations from the University of London (London School of Economics and Political Science) and a Bachelor of Applied Science and Engineering degree in Engineering Science from the University of Toronto.
