Dr. Jie Gao is a research associate with the Broadband Communications Research (BBCR) Lab, University of Waterloo, ON, Canada. Since joining the BBCR in 2019, he has been leading the artificial intelligence (AI) for future wireless networks research group under the supervision of Professor Xuemin Shen and Professor Weihua Zhuang. Before joining the BBCR, he was an NSERC postdoc at Ryerson University(2017-2019), a systems engineer at Mass Fidelity Inc. (2016), and a postdoc at the Centre for Smart Transportation (CST), University of Alberta (2015). He received his M.Sc and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada, in 2009 and 2014, respectively.
Dr. Gao has published 9 first-author technical papers in IEEE Transactions, including IEEE transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE transactions on Wireless Communications, IEEE transactions on Vehicular Technology, and IEEE transactions on Signal Processing. He also has published 9 first-author papers in top conferences of the communications and signal processing area, including IEEE Global Communications Conference, IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory, IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, etc.
The current research focus of Dr. Gao is exploring machine learning-based approaches for future wireless networks, including network architecture design, protocol design, and resource management. His general research interests include:
- Machine learning for next-generation communications
