Juan Carrillo is an MASc student in the UWECEML lab working on using deep learning to automatically classify road snow coverage conditions using low resolution traffic cameras. He has access to a large labelled dataset of road conditions from various cameras around Ontario and will look to combine contextual information, image pretraining and supervised learning to improve upon existing methods to enable better road condition information for traffic and road maintanance planners. This is a challenging image classification problem because the of the low resolution images, the time gap between frames and the relavative similarity between images in different classes.
