Monique Kampherm has a Ph.D. in Rhetoric-English Language and Literature from the University of Waterloo. Monique’s interdisciplinary doctoral research focuses on political rhetoric, social media, and democratic engagement. Her dissertation, Masks and Caricatures: Prosopopoeia, Ethopoeia, and the Effect of Social Media on Canadian Political Leaders' Debates, examines the recent effect of social media on televised political leaders' debates through the lens of ethos.
Monique is a 2023 Governor General's Gold Medal Finalist, the most prestigious award that doctoral graduates in Canadian universities can receive, recognized by the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo for her outstanding dissertation and academic achievements.
Monique held a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship, is a recipient of three Ontario Graduate Scholarships, and four President’s Graduate Scholarships from the University of Waterloo. Monique earned a graduate Certificate in University Teaching and has been awarded Waterloo’s English Independent Graduate Instructor Award for Excellence in Teaching. At Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, Monique was named the RhetCanada Graduate Prize Winner by the Canadian Society for the Study of Rhetoric for her conference paper. It was published, and you can read her article, "Democratic Prosopopoeia: The Rhetorical Influence of the I-Will-Vote Image Filter on Social Media Profile Pictures During the 2015 Canadian Federal Election," in the peer-reviewed journal, Rhetor: The Journal of the Canadian Society for the Study of Rhetoric, 8 (2019), 59-98.
Monique has professional experience as a Policy Advisor for the Infrastructure and Real Estate arm of the Government of Ontario, journalistic experience with Sky News Business and BBC Watchdog in England, and teaching experience as a Sessional Lecturer (UTM), Course Director (York University), Instructor (University of Waterloo), and Partial-Load Professor (Sheridan; Seneca) in professional writing and English-Rhetoric studies.
Monique has earned four graduate degrees in complementary fields, Ph.D. Rhetoric - English Language and Literature (University of Waterloo), M.A. Political Science (Western University), M.A. English - Rhetoric and Communication Design (University of Waterloo), and M.A. Multimedia Journalism - Television, Radio, and Online (Bournemouth University). Her undergraduate studies are also interdisciplinary with a Dip. Hons. in Political Science (Western University) and a B.A. in Administrative and Commercial Studies - Public Administration, Public Policy, and Political Science (Western University).
With her Ph.D. completed, Monique is open to all opportunities. “What is important to me is that my Ph.D. gives me the opportunity to work in an area that contributes to the health of our democracy and the future of our citizens.”
