ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

Role Description

Worked as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for the course MTE – 380 – Mechatronics Design Workshop and ME - 380 - Mechanical Design Workshop. The courses aims to reinforce the principles of the design engineering introduced to the students in their first year. The course also serves as the stepping-stone to the Final Year Design Project (FYDP), also known as Capstone Project. A key point of emphasis for the course is the encouragement of innovation and creativity in the analysis of the need, concept development and its subsequent development and verification. Specifically, I have served as a TA in the following courses:

  • Winter 2022: ME - 380 - Mechanical Design Workshop
  • Fall 2021: ME - 380 - Mechanical Design Workshop
  • Winter 2021: ME - 380 - Mechanical Design Workshop
  • Fall 2020: MTE – 380 – Mechatronics Design Workshop: 2 Teams won 2 Design Awards
  • Winter 2020: ME - 380 - Mechanical Design Workshop
  • Fall 2019: MTE – 380 – Mechatronics Design Workshop: Publication regarding the use of Design Logs
  • Fall 2018: Arch - 393 - Option Design Studio

The primary objective of the course varies from term to term. For instance, in Fall 2019 and Winter 2020, the emphasis placed on the design of a Stewart platform and its subsequent application to meet a real world need. Fall 2020 focused on solving a need that evolved due to the COVID-19 pandemic using principles of the design process. In Winter 2021, the project was significantly more open-ended with the emphasis shifted to solving a need incorporating energy harvesting techniques. In Fall 2021, the course project focused on the development of a pick and place manipulator

Course Structure:

The course structure resembles the hierarchy observed in within the industry. The TAs play the role of the primary supervisor and the first point of contact for all the teams. The Professor (serving the role of CEO) is consulted if/when necessary. Working as a TA for the course has given me the ability to manage 10-15 teams working on independent projects simultaneously.

Expanded Responsibilities due to COVID-19 Pandemic

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the course evolved to meet the ‘work from home’ requirements. As the teaching assistant, I served as a member of the group tasked with the development of a course curriculum to adhere to the new realities of Fall 2020. All meetings with the instructional team were conducted online. Thus, I was able to explore new avenues to guide students. The remaining responsibilities were similar to my previous position.
