Heritage Building Digitization

Historic building information modeling using image.

Image-based Historic building information modeling (HBIM) method was proposed to facilitate heritage conservation. The proposed Image-based approach addresses a crucial need in heritage conservation, especially for sites that face accessibility challenges and lack comprehensive information. The emphasis on simplicity and cost-effectiveness is commendable, as it offers a practical solution for areas where advanced tools may be unavailable. The method relies on identifying façade images of heritage buildings which will be rectified, segmented, and outlined to determined measurements for modeling. The application of this method in the historic port city of Massawa, Eritrea, adds practical value to the research. The fact that the proposed method was successfully used to develop HBIM for heritage buildings, and the validation through historic architectural drawings showcases creating HBIM from images is achievable with a higher degree of precision.

3D-city modelling

Historic building information model (HBIM) based 3D city model of the historic port city of Massawa, Eritrea was developed relying on available resources without requiring cutting-edge 3D data acquisition tools. Building footprint data was combined with elevation data mainly generated from images to develop a 3D city model. Four classes of models that differ in terms of the level of detail, the availability of information used in generating the models, and the level of certainty in modeling were developed. The 3D city model of the port city covers the majority of the historically significant buildings and streetscapes identified by UNESCO with a detailed façade model. The model in its current state can be used for several applications such as visualization, conservation, urban scale assessments, and as a spatial data source to develop a city digital twin. A similar approach can be extended to initiate urban heritage conservation and contribute to sustainable development for inaccessible and resource-deficient sites.
