Research and teaching interests

Sherman’s research focuses on the processes that lay the groundwork for the growth of love in romantic relationships. Specifically, he focuses on personality differences in people’s communication tendencies, which are crucial for the development for intimacy. For example, Sherman has investigated how the personality trait of agreeableness influences the ways in which people communicate hurt feelings and affection in romantic relationships. Sherman is also interested in how people’s communication styles influence relationship and personal well-being.
