Before many students left for field research over the summer, we organized a rock-climbing event at Grand River Rocks which was a great success! Several are now regular climbers! Over the summer, we hosted a water fight with reusable sponges in front of the Grad House to get students thinking about water availability and use. Students were later challenged to some water trivia for great prizes!
Early September we presented a booth at Open Streets in Uptown Waterloo to teach fellow residents about water treatment and use, as well as to share what SWIGS is all about! Katie, our Outreach chair, had an amazing waste water treatment interactive demonstration!
SWIGS also organized a Shoreline Clean-Up event on UW campus, where members and volunteers picked up and tracked trash around Laurel Creek. We found quite a variety of items, both expected and unexpected! Members came together at the Grad House afterwards for a free lunch! We hope to have an even larger team next year!
In October, SWIGS teamed up with another group on campus, University of Waterloo Ecology Group (UWEG), for a skill-sharing camping trip to Point Pelee National Park. Despite some cold weather and rain on our way down, it was a great success! Students took turns teaching each other various skills including wildlife photography, benthic invertebrate identification, story-telling, bird identification, and more!
October ended and November started with the 2015 External Partner Employee Forums hosted by the Water Institute. Students had the opportunity to spread their resumes with companies such as AECOM, Stantec, Golder Associates, and more! Companies were able to share a bit about what they do and represent to students throughout the week.
