Overview
The Sustainability Integration in Curriculum Community of Practice is an opportunity for faculty members, instructors, or anyone leading program and curriculum development to connect with peers and collaborate on efforts to integrate sustainability in courses and programs.
The CoP was a strong recommendation from departments and curriculum developers during consultations in 2023-24, and launched in Fall 2024. The CoP is an excellent resource to learn about what others are doing, understand what has worked, gain feedback on your ideas, and understand available resources and how the curriculum integration framework can be leveraged.
Whether you are actively involved in sustainability curriculum integration or newly thinking about opportunities, the community is a friendly, engaging, and highly interdisciplinary place to connect!
Sessions and Topics
The CoP meets twice per term to maintain a regular cadence but not be too overwhelming. The sessions are usually 60-90 minutes in length, and will include collaborative facilitation from the Sustainability Office, Centre for Teaching Excellence, and/or the Teaching Innovation Incubator.
Attendees can join any topics that are of interest, as you are available. Core topics for the community include:
- Case studies on sustainability integration from existing departments/programs
- Information sessions on available resources and tools at Waterloo
- Specific teaching skills or strategies related to sustainability
- Workshopping and feedback on specific program or course changes
- Networking with peers across the campus
- Professional development and sharing updates on key global sustainability developments for faculty and instructors

Mapping Sustainability Content in Curriculum
At this event, participants will learn about existing approaches to understand where sustainability content and themes may already be present in the curriculum, as well as ways they can further understand this for their own department/program.
Using Campus as a Living Lab
This session for the Integrating Sustainability in Curriculum Community of Practice will explore ways faculty and instructors can use the University of Waterloo campus as a teaching tool to enhance student learning about sustainability.
