News Release: The Toronto Mennonite Theological Centre has ceased its regular programming. Grebel will remain an affiliate member of the Toronto School of Theology. Some other TMTC activities will likely continue under the leadership of other institutions. There will be final virtual event in Fall 2023. Fall 2022 Research Round-up

To welcome another academic year the TMTC community gathered virtually for a celebration of research. TMTC community members from Toronto and beyond shared about the following completed projects or works in progress:

Image of zoom gathering for TMTC Welcome Gathering Jeremy Bergen, Interim TMTC Director, is working on a book project on Christian martyrdom and the unity of the Church. He has also provided theological perspectives on the Pope’s recent apologies to a number of public media outlets. 

Jonathan Boerger is working on a dissertation on a trauma informed theology of the Eucharist at McMaster Divinity College. He will be presenting a paper on Pneumatology and the Eucharist at the Annual Conference of the Society of Pentecostal Studies in March 2023.

Micah Enns is a MA student in Religious Studies at McMaster University, working at the intersection of continental philosophy and theology. He is also the editor-in-chief of the online philosophical journal, Macrina Magazine.

Isaac Friesen just completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Ottawa on the transmission of religion in Canada. He is beginning a two-year SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Cambridge researching the experience  of forced migrants in Amman, Jordan.

Nathan Hershberger, incoming TMTC Research Fellow, recently completed his Doctorate in Theology at Duke University. Nathan will be presenting a paper entitled "Were We Not ‘Children of the Promise?’: Peoplehood, Painful Scriptures, and the Fortitude of Elias Chacour” at the TMTC Scholars Forum in November.

Isaac Kuhl-Schlegel is a master’s student at Emmanuel College interested in the intersections of popular culture and theology. His current work examines theologies of the city in dialogue with the work of Toronto cartoonist Michael DeForge.

Andrew Martin successfully defended his PhD dissertation “Old Order Mennonite Spirituality: An Analysis of Ascetical and Mystical Parallels in Medieval Monasticism and a Contemporary Anabaptist Community” at Regis College at the end of August. His co-supervisors were Michael Stoeber of Regis College and Jeremy Bergen of Conrad Grebel University College/TMTC.

Laena Maunula is an incoming TMTC Research Fellow with a background in public health and sociology of health with recent work focusing on pandemics and public perceptions of risk. She holds a PhD in  Public Health from the University of Toronto and is currently  pursuing a Master of Theological Studies at Trinity International University.

Carol Penner is the current Director of the Theological Studies Program at Conrad Grebel University College. She recently co-edited and published Resistance: Confronting Violence, Power, and Abuse within Peace Churches.

Daniel Rempel is working on a PhD dissertation at the University of Aberdeen on the witness of people with intellectual disabilities. He has an article in an upcoming issue of Anabaptist Witness which engages narratives of health and disability, and their implications for Mennonite theology and practice.

Hadje Sadje is pursuing a PhD in Religious Studies at the Universität Hamburg in Germany. He recently published two books: Theology at the Border: Community Peacemaker Teams and the Refuge Crisis in Europe and Grassroots Asian Theologies: Doing Pentecostal Theology in the Philippine Context.

Chris Sundby is working on a Master’s degree at Regent College in Vancouver examining the history of reception and interpretation of the work of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

Hyejung Jessie Yum is close to finishing her PhD at Emmanuel College and has recently been affirmed for ordination in her ministry work with Sowing for Peace, an intercultural peace ministry in Toronto.
