Andrew Moore successfully defended his PhD thesis, “Manorial Regulation and Negotiation in a Late Medieval Environment: Land and Community at Herstmonceux, 1308-1440,” on 17 November 2021. His dissertation examines the role that environment played in the negotiation of rights and responsibilities on a fundamental socioeconomic institution of rural communities in late medieval England — the manor.

“Face to Face with History,” the 28th annual Tri-University History Conference to be held virtually on March 12, 2022, is organized this year by a team from Wilfrid Laurier University. The conference invites us to examine and discuss together how personal, political, and cultural interactions have transformed history and the ways we understand history.

“Sun Science: Environmental Health, Medical Specialization and Body Politics in 20^th-Century Canada,” is the title of Dr. Sarah Shropshire’s successfully defended dissertation. The defence was held on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 virtually through the University of Guelph.

The Laurier Centre for Military Strategic and Disarmament Studies (LCMSDS), which has become one of Canada’s largest military history research centres since its founding in the early 1990s by Terry Copp and Marc Kilgour, is now expanding to become the Laurier Centre for the Study of Canada (LCSC).

New Tri-U Graduate Students Association (TUGSA) co-Presidents were elected by their peers earlier this Fall 2021. Tri-U Director Dr. Jane Nicholas congratulates the new presidents on their election. She says, “TUGSA does important work to sustain the Tri-U community and I look forward to working with this year’s executive.”

Chelsea Larsson successfully defended her PhD thesis, "Violence, Legal Culture and Social Control: The Records of Scotland’s Justiciary Court, 1493–1558," on 15 October 2021.

Russ Freure successfully defended his PhD thesis, "A Modern American Conservative: How Ronald Reagan Legitimized the Religious Right and Helped Reshape the American Zeitgeist," on April 15, 2021.

Cody Groat, a Tri-University History PhD Candidate based at Laurier, was recently appointed to a position with Western University's Indigenous Studies Program and History Department.

"An outstanding doctoral candidate in History, Rebecca MacAlpine is a dedicated, disciplined, and thoughtful student, and she brings those same characteristics to her roles as TA, instructor, and most recently departmental TA Mentor and Coordinator."

The Tri-University History Program congratulates this year's Essay Prize winners announced during the annual conference on March 5-6 that was held virtually this year.
