Getting Here

Arriving by Air

Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) Located just 20 minutes from the University, YKF is the most convenient option for domestic travelers.

  • Ground Transit: You can take Grand River Transit (GRT) Route 78 or use the GRT Flex App to book the Route 79 Breslau On-Demand service to connect to the Kitchener Train Station or ION Light Rail.
  • Rideshare: Uber, Lyft, and local taxi services are available for direct transport to campus or your hotel.

Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) is approximately 1 hour (85 km) from Waterloo.

  • Direct Shuttle: Airways Transit provides door-to-door shared or private shuttle service directly to Waterloo hotels and the University.
  • Air Canada / Landline Bus: If you are flying with Air Canada, you can book a "motorcoach" connection (The Landline) that takes you directly from Pearson to the Waterloo Airport (YKF).
  • Public Transit: GO Bus Route 40 connects Pearson Terminal 1 to Square One, where you can transfer to Route 25 directly to the University of Waterloo. Alternatively, take the UP Express train to Union Station, then transfer to a GO Train or VIA Rail to Kitchener.

Arriving by Rail (GO Transit & VIA Rail)

Both GO Transit and VIA Rail arrive at the Kitchener GO/VIA Station (126 Weber St W)

  • VIA Rail: Connects to the Windsor-Quebec City corridor. It is a comfortable, scenic option for those traveling from Toronto, London, or beyond.
  • GO Train: The Kitchener Line offers weekday service and expanding weekend service from Toronto’s Union Station.
  • Connecting to Campus: From the Kitchener Train Station, walk one block to the Central ION Station to take the light rail (Northbound toward Conestoga) directly to the University of Waterloo Station.

Driving & Parking

  • The AMP mobile pay (AMP) app provides a convenient digital payment experience by eliminating the need for physical machines and paper tickets. With AMP, you can view pictures of parking locations for easy reference, renew parking sessions from your phone, and more. Authorized payment options include Visa, American Express, or MasterCard. 
  • Visitor parking is available for $7.25 per day in the following list of lots:
    • Lots B (marked visitor spots at Eng 6), C, CLV, J, N, Q, S, V, W, X, Optometry (visitor), and Toby Jenkins lot 
    • Lot M: $8.30 per day

Getting Around: Grand River Transit (GRT)

Use the GRT EasyGO Trip Planner or Google Maps for real-time bus and train schedules. GRT buses and the ION accept Tap-to-Pay (Credit/Debit/Mobile Wallet) or EasyGO fare cards.

  • ION Light Rail: This connects Kitchener and Waterloo with a stop directly in the heart of the University of Waterloo campus. ION trains run every 10–15 minutes during peak hours.
  • Bus Services: GRT buses cover the entire region.
