Alliances and Relationships - UW

As part of its mission to interact with academe and practice, UWCISA seeks to create and sustain relationships with academic units with similar objectives and professional associations with an interest in information integrity and information systems assurance. We have joined the University of Waterloo’s Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute (CPI) and Waterloo.AI.

General – Interaction

Alliances and Relationships - CPA 

  • Activities during current fiscal period (cumulative): We have an alliance with CPA Canada which is the primary sponsor of UWCISA. We have participated in several initiatives including the redevelopment of the IT competency map, assurance innovation, and information integrity project. 

Alliances and Relationships - IIA

  • Activities during current fiscal period (cumulative): We have a partnership with IIA Canada and the Toronto Chapter of IIA. We are also working with IIA to increase student awareness about relevant careers and create a more formalized academic / employment path for the same.  

Alliances and Relationships - AICPA 

  • Activities during current fiscal period (cumulative): Efrim Boritz is a member of the AICPA Trust Services Information Integrity Task Force and the Cybersecurity Working Group.  
  • Updated SOC guidance was published in 2022; Cybersecurity developments are being monitored.

Alliances and Relationships - IJAIS 

  • Activities during current fiscal period (cumulative): We have an alliance with the IJAIS (International Journal of Accounting Information Systems) through its co-sponsorship of the Symposium and related special symposium issue of the IJAIS. 
  • The special issue based on the 2021 Symposium was published in 2022; planning for 2023 is in progress.

Alliances and Relationships - SET 

  • Activities during current fiscal period (cumulative): We have an alliance with the SET (Strategic and Emerging Technologies in Accounting) section of the AAA which relates to the JETA (Journal of Emerging Technologies in Accounting).  

Alliances and Relationships – CAAA 

  • Activities during current fiscal period (cumulative): The CAAA (Canadian Academic Accounting Association) was a symposium sponsor in 2017 and  2019. 

Alliances and Relationships - CASEWARE IDEA 

  • Activities during current fiscal period (cumulative): CaseWare IDEA was a gold level  event sponsor of the 2019 Symposium and the Data Analytics Workshop and Panel held as part of the Symposium in 2017.  

Alliances and Relationships - Virtual International Collaborative for Education 

  • Activities during current fiscal period (cumulative): Development of international network of centres with similar purposes continues. We have agreed to create a virtual international center for education (VICE) whereby we will share course offerings among center members. We created a course titled International Topics in Assurance which was offered over 12 weeks from May to July 2022. The course consisted of 6 modules offered by Waterloo, Rutgers, Duisburg and Durham. The topics were Assurance Services, Continuous Monitoring, Process Mining, ESG Assurance, AI/ML Assurance, and SOC and Related Assurance services. The enrollment was 20 UW MAcc students. Several Rutgers students also participated in some of the classes.

Assurance – Interaction 

Engaging with Profession, Students, Public 

 

Assurance Innovation 

  • Activities during current fiscal period (cumulative): UWCISA has been invited to speak with the AICPA Assurance Services Executive Committee about the future of assurance.
  • UWCISA members presented a summary of their research on new assurance service areas & development at ASEC conference call and then liaised with the AICPA in November 2022 to discuss engagement opportunities (including roundtables) at ASEC's in-person meeting January 31 & February 1, 2023. 

 

Assurance in Practice 

  • Activities during current fiscal period (cumulative): Current team-related issues in the field. Tim Bauer has been invited to speak on a panel of researchers and practitioners at the AAA Audit Midyear Meeting in January 2023. The panel will discuss the topics of engagement team-related issues such as turnover, work-life balance, time pressure, post-COVID working environments. 

Cybersecurity – Interaction 

 

Alliances and Relationships - AICPA 

  • Activities during current fiscal period (cumulative): Efrim is a member of the AICPA Trust Services Information Integrity Task Force, the Cybersecurity Task Force. Updated SOC guidance is in progress. Response to SEC proposal on Cybersecurity Risks is in progress.

  • Activities during current fiscal period (cumulative): Alec Cram is a member.

Internal Audit & ESG – Interaction 

 

Alliances and Relationships – IIA 

  • Activities during current fiscal period (cumulative):

  • Adam Vitalis continues to work with members of the Toronto Chapter of IIA to build an IA specialization at UW that could be replicated at other Universities. The goal is to align supply (students) with demand (hiring based on completing the specialization) so that it would increase the profile of internal audit and provide another career path for students. 

  • Companies are hiring co-op students starting in January under our new initiative.
