Research: My PhD thesis aims to investigate the regulation and determinants of venous blood flow. Employing advanced ultrasound imaging techniques I am characterizing the behaviour of venous flow in and around venous valves under volume stressed conditions and describing the intricacies of the calf muscle pump in younger and older adults. My work has also described new venous pumping mechanisms, termed the arterial pump, with relevance for prolonged rest periods. Furthermore, I am gaining experiencing in ultrasound development and signal processing techniques with applications for dynamic ultrasound scans during exercise and arterial bifurcation flow behaviours in the lower limb.
