Water policy, management and governance

Environmental and resource economics

As fresh water becomes scarce it plays an increasingly important role in the economy, as it is one of earth's most critical commodities. This is particularly true in Ontario, where we lay claim to a significant percentage of the world's fresh water. University of Waterloo economists are invested in understanding the future of the global water economy, balancing the often opposing goals of industrial and ecological interests.

Water and health

Water and health are inextricably linked. Globally, lack of access to fresh water is the leading cause of disease and mortality.

Water policy, management, and governance

Determining how best to use our water resources in a sustainable fashion while still meeting residential, commercial, and industrial needs is no easy feat. Waterloo researchers are interested in finding ways to minimize negative impacts on ecosystems and water quality while still meeting demand. Attention also focuses on alternative governance models to facilitate effective implementation of an ecosystem approach through integrated water resources management.
