Aaron Shantz

MES Candidate, Planning

Aaron is a graduate candidate in the MES Planning program at the University of Waterloo.  He graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies with options in both Geomatics and International Policy from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2018.  His research interests involve studying the economic impacts of public transit implementation, specifically in relation to high speed rail systems.

Yue Zhao

Yue is a PhD student in the Transportation Engineering Program in Civil Engineering. She graduated from the University of Waterloo with an Honours BES in Geomatics with a minor in Computer Science in 2015 and a MSc in Geography in 2017.

Jeffrey M. Casello

Professor, School of Planning and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Professor Jeff Casello’s interests lie in urban transportation systems and their impacts on healthy and economically viable urban areas. As such, he conducts research on the design and operation of public transportation systems, urban roadway systems, and facilities for non-motorized modes. His research aims to promote efficient, balanced transportation that enhances regional economic competitiveness and supports social mobility. 

Pedram Fard

PhD Candidate, Planning

Pedram graduated with a BA in Urban Planning from Tehran University of Art in 2006 and an MSc in Geo-information for Urban Planning and Management from the University of Twente in 2013. Being enthusiastic to work and research at the intersection of the urban planning and geographic information science (GIScience) disciplines, he has professionally contributed to urban informatics feasibility studies and urban and regional development plans in the public and private sectors. His research studies spatial and temporal patterns of land-use changes due to light rail transit (LRT) development.

Adam Fraser

MASc Candidate, Civil Engineering

Adam graduated with a BES in Urban Planning with a specialization in urban design from Waterloo in 2015. He has worked in both the public and private sector. His research interests are in active transportation and bicycle infrastructure design. 

Janelle Lee

MES Candidate, Planning

Janelle graduated with a BSc in Environmental and Conservation Sciences from the University of Alberta. Her research studies the impacts of informal transportation services on urban development in developing countries. 

Andrea Mikkila

MES Candidate, Planning

Andrea graduated with a BES in Planning from Waterloo in 2013, and has had three years of planning experience working with Grand River Transit. Her research uses GPS data from study participants to model travel behaviour in the Region of Waterloo.

Alie Thompson

MES Candidate, Planning

Alie graduated with a BES in Geography and Environmental Management with a minor in Earth Sciences from Waterloo in 2016. Her research interests lie in studying the influence of sustainable transportation method implementation on modal split and morphology in urban areas. 

Xiaomeng Xu

PhD Candidate, Planning

Xiaomeng (Ming) graduated with a BE in Software Engineering from Yunnan University and a Master of Community and Regional Planning (MCRP) from Iowa State University. As part of her graduate research, she worked as a planning associate for the River Bend Neighbourhood's Revitalization Plan update. Her research uses automatically-collected trip data to study travel behaviour for use in future planning studies.
