Seismic line restoration

Restoration of peatland seismic lines

Over 300,000 km of lines have been cut through peatland for geologic exploration in the province of Alberta (aka seismic lines). Passage of heavy equipment and removal of canopy cover alters ecohydrological conditions on the line and many do not recover tree cover for decades. In collaboration with Dr. Felix Nwaishi (Mount Royal University) and Dr. Bin Xu (NAIT Boreal Research Institute) we are testing mounding, planting and fertilizing techniques to restore peatland seismic lines. We will monitor the return of hydrologic, ecologic and biogeochemical function at the restored sites. This project is funded by the Environmental Damages Fund.
