Fall 23 WiM Undergraduate Committee

Are you passionate about mathematics? Here's your chance to make a real impact. Women in Mathematics (WiM) is on the lookout for enthusiastic representatives to join the Mathematics Undergraduates (WiMugrad). At the heart of it, the WiM committee is dedicated to cultivating an environment that empowers female and gender minority students within the math faculty.
WiMugrad is committed to addressing the issue of under-representation and strives to achieve a balanced, equal representation of all genders in the world of mathematics. Apply using the Google form here, or visit the WiM Undergraduate page for more information.

Don't miss out, applications are open until August 23rd!

Join WiM in celebrating International Women in Math Day with a discussion on "The Social “Threatwork”: Connecting Women's Exclusion from STEM Social Networks to Implicit and Explicit Gender Stereotypes" with Dr. Hilary Bergsieker.

When, why, and with what effect are women sometimes excluded from informal social networks in STEM fields? Drawing on social identity threat and structural hole theories, a series of studies assess social network dynamics that may limit women's full inclusion in STEM circles.

Dr. Hilary Bergsieker is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Waterloo, where she leads the Diversity and Intergroup Relations Lab and serves as her department's Program Area Lead for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism.

The event will take place on May 12th at MC 5501 from 10:30-11:30 AM. Register here. Everyone is welcome!

The DRP End of Term Social has been canceled due to weather conditions (both days). Stay tuned next term for more exciting events!

What is a better way to celebrate the hard work of the Winter 2023 DRP participants and UW students than a relaxing evening with a campfire, music, and some smores? Moreover, if you are thinking about joining the DRP for the Spring 2023 term, come out to learn more about what the program is about. Please be advised that this event is weather-dependent. We encourage you to bring any lawn chairs or blankets for the grass. Smores will be provided!

The event will take place on April 30th from 6-8pm. All students, staff, and faculty are welcome! No registration required.

Interested in learning a new mathematical concept taught by your peers? Come support students in the faculty of math by attending the DRP presentations! All students, staff, and faculty are welcome.

The presentations will be held on April 11th from 10-2:30 and April 12th from 10:30-1:30.

The presentation schedule can be viewed here. Please note that lunch will only be provided for DRP participants and the WiM Committee. No registration required.

Join WiM for a 2-day hands-on workshop for women in math who are pursuing a graduate degree (Masters or PhD) to get better prepared for a successful completion of the program as well as receive guidance and mentorship with regards to career opportunities post-graduation! Our aim is to create a comfortable space that is conducive for healthy discussions and reflections as well as to promote interaction between peers within the Faculty of Mathematics.

Register here before March 23. Please note that attendance is limited to 30 participants in total. Registered participants on a waitlist will be informed if a spot opens up.
