Pinguins (Mechatronics Engineering)

Pinguins UWaterloo Capstone Team

March 22nd, 2023

As part of our FYDP/Capstone 2023 spotlights, we’re excited to introduce “Pinguins” from the Mechatronics Engineering team: Ahmad Kamal, Zachariah Mears, Kat von Friedl, Kaelan Moffett-Steinke and Krishn Kiran Ray!

Explain your project in one sentence

We made a distributed positioning system that can locate an ROV(remotely operated vehicle) underwater.

What has been the best part of your project so far?

Getting to test the project in the PAC pool with our friends and an ROV

What are the biggest challenges you've faced during the project? How did you overcome it?

Our biggest challenge was making our system robust to noise and reflections. We overcame that by designing every part of our system to minimize the effects of noise

How does your project improve human lives and/or our planet's health?

Our project opens a new world of underwater automation, enabling industries such as aquaculture and underwater environmental data collection to grow

What's next for your team members (ie: working full-time, looking for a job, starting a business, etc).

Some of us are sticking around for grad school, while others are moving and getting into industry.

We’re very excited for the future of the project. We partnered with a local ROV company, Deep Trekker, to develop the project. We’re looking forward to what comes next.
