Awardees Announced for Bordeaux-Waterloo Research Grants in AI and Health
Congratulations to AI Institute members Laura Middleton (AHS), Edith Law (Math), Anindya Sen (Arts), Plinio Morita (AHS), and Omar Ramahi (Engineering) on being awarded research grants from a fund established by the University of Waterloo and the University of Bordeaux to support collaborative projects between the two campuses. Several of the collaborative projects arose out of a workshop on AI and Health held at the University of Bordeaux in April of this year that was co-organized by Waterloo AI Institute and the University of Bordeaux.

The Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) visits the Waterloo AI Institute
On October 25, a delegation from the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI), an independent agency of the Government of Canada that is the regulator of the banks and insurance companies in Canada, visited the Waterloo AI Institute. The aim of the visit was to discuss and understand the uses, development and deployment of AI/ML models, with the end goal of issuing guidance to the financial institutions that they oversee.
"The Record" Delves into the Transformative Power of AI: UW Contributions to the Field
The regional newspaper "The Record" is publishing a multi-part series tackling research in AI done in the Waterloo Region, and specifically at UW and research labs affiliated with its AI Institute. The articles highlight recent exciting research done by faculty members and research scientists in various fields of applied and theoretical development of AI.
Waterloo AI Institute Organizes its Second Reverse Co-Op
The Waterloo AI Institute has organized from the 17th to 19th of October 2019 its second reverse co-op event involving industrial partners and sponsors of the Institute. The event was preceded by the annual partner meeting day on October 16th, which highlighted progress on research undertaken by Waterloo AI Institute members with funding from the industrial partners. The reverse co-op activity of the event was spread over three days and included presentations made by experts in the field of Natural Language Understanding (theory and applications).
