Type 2 diabetes linked to worse performance on cognitive testing

Type 2 diabetes is associated with worse performance on cognitive tests measuring abilities involved in the control of emotions, behaviours and thought, says a new study from the University of Waterloo.

The paper appears in Psychosomatic Medicine, and is the first comprehensive statistical summary of available studies that examine the link between type 2 diabetes and a reduction of certain cognitive abilities, known as executive functions. The executive functions inhibit habitual thinking patterns, knee-jerk emotional reactions and reflexive behaviours such as making impulse purchases or automatically following social cues.

The student portal is coming your way, AHSSIES!

Student Portal Advertisement
Wouldn’t it be nice to know how busy it is in the PAC or CIF weight room before you headed there? Or what about knowing the nutrition facts in that sandwich you picked up from DC? UWaterloo’s student portal is coming to AHS to help you find the UWaterloo information you need, just when you need it.

This sleek, mobile-friendly communication tool will be rolled out to all AHS students the week of March 16. Log in to have a convenient, customizable tool that reports your class schedule, what study spaces are available, the balance on your WatCard, when your next GRT bus will arrive, when your academic deadlines are approaching, how busy campus line-ups and spaces are, plus much more.

The Student Success Office will send you an email invitation to access the student portal. When you start using it, be sure to submit your feedback so the portal can evolve to become an extremely valuable tool for all UWaterloo students.  In the meantime, if you want more details you can check out the portal site.
