A message from the Campus Plan Steering Committee
Now is the time for a future-ready campus
At the University of Waterloo, we are not just planning for the present but for the future—a future where our campus supports bold thinking, innovative research, and inclusivity. The University of Waterloo last embarked on a plan like this in 2009. By updating it we are setting a blueprint for transforming our physical space to reflect our values and enhance our capabilities. This is why it’s so important for everyone to be engaged in this process.
The Campus Plan will be the embodiment of Waterloo at 100--our vision for the future as we approach our centennial in 2057. We are preparing for global challenges and opportunities by expanding and economically rethinking our facilities, spaces, and amenities to support interdisciplinary research and innovation.
Our future lies in addressing the world's pressing issues, while being practical and resourceful. To support this, we need a campus that fosters sustainability—from materials to energy and waste management. The Campus Plan ensures our built environment is as forward-thinking as the ideas it nurtures.

Adapting infrastructure for a resilient future
The Provost’s Advisory Committee on Building a Resilient University has identified priorities for adapting campus infrastructure. This plan focuses on creating flexible, sustainable facilities that safeguard community well-being. By addressing future challenges through decarbonization, sustainable energy use, and open-space enhancement, we ensure that our campus evolves in harmony with environmental and social demands. These efforts set a new standard for campus design and serve as a blueprint for institutions facing similar challenges globally.

Building a campus of equity, diversity, and inclusion
Equity, diversity, and inclusion are at the heart of our vision for a student-centered campus. By embedding these principles into our physical spaces and culture, we ensure every student feels valued and empowered to contribute. From accessible classrooms to inclusive housing, we aim to provide equitable opportunities that celebrate our community's diversity and drive innovation. Together, we’re creating an environment that allows everyone to thrive academically, socially, and personally.

Living our values in campus design
The Campus Plan reflects our values of Thinking Differently, Acting with Purpose, and Working Together. We are creating spaces that prioritize sustainability, accessibility, and inclusivity. These values are embedded in every detail—from eco-friendly materials and energy management to accessible pathways and vibrant housing—all fostering a resilient environment for living, learning, and working.

Engaging communities in a collaborative process
The Campus Plan is shaped by the voices of students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Through workshops and consultations, we gather insights and aspirations to design a campus that supports research and teaching excellence, strengthens the student experience, and fosters an inclusive environment. Together, we are building lifelong connections and a vibrant, healthy UWaterloo.

Creating a legacy for future generations
This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape a campus that inspires and sustains future generations.
By engaging the entire community, we aim to build a resilient, inclusive, and forward-thinking university. Through collaboration, we are creating a lasting legacy that supports our mission and vision for years to come.

Supporting our community with inclusive housing
To meet the needs of our growing campus, we prioritize housing that is safe, welcoming, and inclusive. These residences support student well-being and a sense of belonging while addressing diverse needs. By improving pathways, transportation systems, and campus navigation, we ensure that everyone can access and engage in campus life with ease.

Embracing Indigenous knowledge and values
The University of Waterloo is committed to decolonization by reflecting and respecting Indigenous histories, values, and contributions. Through collaboration with Indigenous scholars and knowledge keepers, we integrate Indigenous-led design principles into campus spaces. By honoring natural elements, sustainable practices, and cultural symbols, we advance reconciliation and ensure Indigenous voices are heard, valued, and celebrated.

Evolving with the needs of the Region
Since its founding, UWaterloo has built strong ties with the local community, fostering partnerships that drive co-operative education, fuel entrepreneurship, and sustain growth. These partnerships extend to regional and global institutions, organizations, and businesses that enhance our entrepreneurial spirit. By staying deeply connected with the city, region, and country, we ensure that UWaterloo remains a driving force for innovation and progress.
