The Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging (RIA) welcomes applications for a cohort of research scientists to support a 2-year research and evaluation study of the Living Classroom (LC) initiative in Ontario. The LC is a partnership model that integrates experiential education into long-term care (LTC) to support workforce development in senior living. Through this model, students, faculty, and those living, visiting, and working in LTC engage in a culture of shared learning. 

The RIA aims to recruit up to three research scientists in the creation of an interdisciplinary research team with overall competency in a range of research perspectives and methodologies including implementation science, evaluation, quantitative methods and qualitative methods. The  team will co-develop and lead research to understand the implementation and impact of the LC program on recruitment and retention of trained personal support workers (PSWs) in LTC, considering individual, organizational and systemic-level barriers and facilitators. The research team will be further supported through collaborative engagement with internal and external program partners and government funders. The research team will be required to participate in reporting to government funders and may be supported to present findings through various methods such as conferences and publications and contribute to the development of future grant applications.

Terms and Compensation:

  • Part-time or full-time options available (3-5 days per week)
  • Hiring range: $55,000 - $65,000 annually based upon full-time hours of 40 per week (plus hybrid working options available and optional benefits)
  • Start date: June - September 2024 (flexible)
  • Fixed-term contract until March 31, 2026

Key Accountabilities:

  1. Research and Evaluation Development: Work collaboratively as part of a research team to co-design and lead an interdisciplinary mixed-methods research and evaluation study with other researchers, key partners, and RIA team. This will include development of methodologies, identification and development of data collection tools with the goal of understanding the effect of the LC model on recruitment and retention of PSWs in the LTC sector. 
  2. Research and Evaluation Implementation: Support the collection (i.e. surveys, interviews, focus groups), cleaning and analysis of all project data. Work closely with the project team to evaluate and adjust implementation to achieve strong participation and ensure confidence in research and evaluation outcomes. Monitor project progress and problem solve through solutions and corrective actions, when necessary, to achieve results within project timelines.
  3. Partner Engagement: Engage with key partners including PSWs, education institutions and LTC homes to better measure and understand the factors that lead to attrition and reduced retention of PSWs in the LTC sector. Participate in meetings with internal and external staff and partners to support a collaborative approach to the research and evaluation e.g. seeking feedback and sharing updates and findings.
  4. Communication and Reporting: Lead research and ensure deliverables, including recommendations regarding the spread of LCs, are reported both internally to the RIA and externally to key partners and government agencies. Lead and support the preparation of internal and external reports, publications, and presentations in a matter that is most effective for the target audience. Support the sharing of updates and results through knowledge mobilization products and events.
  5. Other: Performs additional tasks, as assigned, by the Manager or Director, Research and Knowledge Mobilization. Other tasks as assigned.

Position Requirements

Education:

Doctoral degree preferred in a relevant discipline (Gerontology, Health Sciences, Public Health, Education) with a focus on aging, qualitative/quantitative methodology, implementation sciences, evaluation and/or mixed methods research.

Skills and Experience:

  • Experience in mixed methods and/or qualitative, quantitative or implementation science, including knowledge of evaluation techniques.
  • Experience in the field of gerontology with a focus on enhancing the quality of care and life of older adults.
  • Understanding of LTC and issues related to recruitment and retention within LTC is an asset.

Primary Purpose

The Knowledge Mobilization Manager is a self-motivated individual who is able to lead the planning and implementation of knowledge mobilization initiatives from the inception to completion of research projects led by researchers and funded programs. The Knowledge Mobilization Manager understands and applies best practices in knowledge mobilization to each initiative to support and impact practice and/or policy and spread and scale of programs. This role will collaborate closely with RIA researchers, communications, RIA team members, external partners, and those with lived experience to support the effective implementation and mobilization of research and programs to improve the quality of life and care of older adults.

The role will support RIA’s vision, mission, and values as well as have an interest and passion for enhancing quality of life and care for older adults and those who care for them.

Key Accountabilities

  1. Knowledge Mobilization: Provide leadership to the development, adoption and implementation of RIA’s knowledge mobilization strategy based on best practices and co-design principles in alignment with RIA’s strategic plan. Understand, develop and apply knowledge mobilization strategies to initiatives that reflect the needs of the target audience and increase the uptake and impact of evidence-based knowledge. Manage and design appropriate, engaging, and high-quality knowledge mobilization products, tools and activities to support evidence-informed outcomes and meet the needs of the target audience. This may include advising on the development of products across a range of formats such as reports, infographics, research summaries, web resources and videos. Inform implementation and evaluation plans to measure the impact of knowledge mobilization projects and products.
  2. Partner Engagement: Liaise and build strong relationships with multiple external partners to engage in co-design and spread knowledge mobilization resources. Engage with key users to identify needs in the sector in alignment with RIA’s strategic plan. Participate in external committees, working groups, communities of practice, and projects, as required.
  3. Teamwork: Work collaboratively with RIA team members including the communications team to meet organizational, program, and project goals by facilitating the adoption of a shared knowledge mobilization framework. Share knowledge and best practices across the organization. Provide leadership and mentorship to support staff and/or casual staff as part of our pooled-resource staffing model.
  4. Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills for engagement with the RIA team and external partners, in the development of knowledge mobilization products, presenting, chairing meetings, and report writing. Ability to communicate with diverse partners, including researchers, clinicians, community organizations, older adults, people with lived experience and their care partners. Pro-actively and regularly communicate with the project team and leadership including obstacles and challenges as they arise. Document and maintain project files to maximize knowledge mobilization information sharing and to facilitate practice change.
  5. Other: Take on additional tasks, activities and special projects, as they arise.

Position Requirements

Education:

University degree in social sciences, public health, health services research or education research. Certificate and/or training in knowledge mobilization or equivalent experience is required.

Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience leading the development and evaluation of knowledge mobilization plans, resources and activities for research outcomes and projects.
  • Strong understanding of knowledge mobilization theories and best practices to reach audiences.

The Ontario Centres for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long-Term Care (CLRI) is a program of the RIA, Baycrest Academy for Research and Education, Bruyère, that partners with the long-term care (LTC) sector to enhance the health and well-being of those who live and work in LTC homes. We provide programs and resources to train and engage the current and future workforce. The Ontario CLRI is funded by the Government of Ontario.

Primary Purpose

The Director, Ontario CLRI will provide strategic and operational leadership to the Ontario CLRI program in partnership with Baycrest and Bruyère. The role will be accountable for the successful implementation of Ontario CLRI at the RIA projects and initiatives, including budget management. As an experienced leader, the Director, Ontario CLRI will guide a team of professionals to enhance the health and well-being of those who live and work in LTC homes across Ontario. This role will establish and maintain strategic partnerships with government funders, key LTC and education partners, and researchers to achieve impact and meet the changing needs of the sector. Additionally, this role will be responsible for identifying funding opportunities, leading proposal writing and supporting the writing and securing of new funding.

The role will support RIA’s vision, mission, and values as well as have an interest and passion for enhancing quality of life and care for older adults and team members working in senior living.

Key Accountabilities

  1. Leadership: Provide strategic and operational leadership to the Ontario CLRI Program portfolio to ensure impact and alignment with funding and RIA’s strategic direction. The Director, Ontario CLRI will act as a member of the RIA leadership team and will also provide input on the RIA’s strategic and operational direction. Work closely with the broader RIA team to leverage and align work and impact and identify and secure grant funding. Work collaboratively with and provide supervision and mentorship to team members to ensure division success in alignment with RIA’s culture and values.
  2. Partner Engagement and Knowledge Mobilization: Build and maintain partnerships with external and internal partners to support organizational goals. Identify and mobilize opportunities for impact across the sector in collaboration with the research team and external partners. Provide strategic direction to the development of education and resources such as high-quality reports, presentations, education, and other knowledge mobilization products.
  3. Communication and Reporting: Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to tailor messaging to diverse audiences. Present and discuss complex matters with partners through a variety of virtual and in-person events and meetings. Proactively report to funders, team members, and key partners on activities, and contribute to the writing and dissemination of various written products, including grant applications, technical reports, and program reports. Represent Ontario CLRI at the RIA as a chair or attendee of various committees, meetings, conferences, and events.
  4. Financial Management: Responsible for the development and management of division/program budget and support project teams with project budget development. In partnership with the RIA accounting department, provide regular reporting of expenditures to senior leadership and funding agencies, as required. Responsible for management of spending in alignment with RIA policies and funder guidelines. Ability to effectively source and work with consultants and vendors to ensure successful outcomes. Complete all funder reporting requirements.

Position Requirements

Education:

Master’s degree or equivalent experience related to social sciences, education, gerontology, health administration or other related discipline. Certificate and/or training in knowledge mobilization, and/or quality improvement is an asset.

Skills and Experience:

  • At least 8 years experience in providing strategic direction and leadership to organizational programs or divisions.
  • 5 years of experience in leading and supervising a project team in alignment with organizational values and project goals.
  • 5 years of experience managing large, complex budgets.
  • Experience working with and building effective working relationships with external partners, including funding organizations, with strong, demonstrated ability to negotiate and build consensus.

Responsible for various initiative activities, funding applications, partner engagement, ethics applications, recruitment, data collection, interviews, workshop planning, developing recommendations, working with a team to achieve objectives. Document and maintain files to maximize information sharing.

Position Requirements

Education:

University degree in social sciences, public health, or health services research.

Training or equivalent experience in research methods, evaluation and/or knowledge mobilization typically obtained through a Master’s degree or a research apprenticeship role.

Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in co-design and relationship-building with  various partners including researchers, clinicians and people with lived experience, specifically older adults and their care partners.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in project management, including project planning, management, budgeting and evaluation.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a research setting, with an understanding of basic research methodologies and practices including  recruitment, ethical consent, interview experience, as well as quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Experience with facilitating consensus making discussion and fostering ongoing relationships with partners.

We provide programs and resources to train and engage the current and future workforce. The Ontario CLRI is funded by the Government of Ontario.

The Living Classroom is a partnership model that integrates education into a LTC or retirement home to support workforce development in senior living. Students, faculty, and those living, visiting, and working in the home engage in a culture of shared learning. The RIA was host to one of the first Living Classrooms in Ontario, and the goal of this current project is to spread, scale and evaluate the Living Classroom model across the province. This project is in collaboration with CESBA (The Ontario Association of Adult and Continuing Education School Board Administrators).

Primary Purpose

The Project Coordinator supports the coordination and implementation of Ontario CLRI projects and knowledge mobilization activities and provides support to the CLRI team. Support will include project tracking, maintenance of project databases, coordinating meetings, coordination of events, managing project files, supporting evaluation activities and data collection, and working closely with partners in the LTC sector, education sector (i.e., school boards, colleges and universities that train health care workers), and funders.

The role will support RIA’s vision, mission, and values as well as have an interest and passion for enhancing quality of life and care for older adults and those who care for them.

Key Accountabilities

  1. Ontario CLRI Team Support: Work closely with the team to support the implementation of Ontario CLRI projects and knowledge mobilization activities including project tracking, data collection, maintaining project files and databases, proofreading materials, meeting support (scheduling, material preparation and minute taking), data entry, and supporting the coordination of translation and mailouts.  
  2. Knowledge Mobilization: Facilitate the dissemination of project information and findings. This could include presentations, development of promotional tools, webpages, and contributing to reports. Participate in internal and external committees, work groups and projects, as required.
  3. Teamwork: Pro-actively and regularly communicate with supervisor and project team regarding assigned work, including communicating obstacles and challenges as they arise. Consult with team members about their needs and liaise between team members and supervisor. Actively participate in team and organization-wide meetings virtually and in-person.

Primary Purpose

The Education Coordinator engages in training delivery and facilitation, event coordination and administration, participant and partner engagement, and reporting outcomes on educational offerings and progress. The position requires a self-motivated and organized individual who is able to work on multiple initiatives at the same time and take on additional tasks, as required.

Key Accountabilities

  1. Education Facilitation: Work closely with the team to support the facilitation of education, communities of practice or other workshops offered to senior living organizations. Be confident and fluent in the content of facilitated training and tools for virtual delivery. Ensure active participation by all participants. 
  2. Education Coordination: Coordination of educational offerings including scheduling, registration, participant communication, problem solving, documenting and maintaining project files.
  3. Participant Engagement and Support: Provide support and clear communication to all organizations and individuals participating in educational offerings through phone calls and emails. Support the recruitment and engagement of participants and the dissemination of education materials to learners.
  4. Teamwork: Pro-actively and regularly communicate with supervisor and project teams regarding assigned work, including communicating obstacles and challenges as they arise. The role will be accountable for the successful implementation of a variety of projects that enhance the health and well-being of older adults. As an experienced leader, you will guide a team of professionals to coordinate project activities, engage with partners, identify opportunities for partnerships and funding, and develop evidence-based resources. Additionally, you will be responsible for identifying funding opportunities, and supporting the writing and securing of new funding.

Key Accountabilities

  1. Leadership: Provide strategic and operational leadership to a team of people in alignment with project and organizational strategic priorities. Work closely with the funders and the broader RIA team to leverage and align work and impact and identify and secure grant funding. Work collaboratively with and provide supervision and mentorship to team members to ensure project success in alignment with RIA’s culture and values.
  2. Knowledge Mobilization and Partner Engagement: Provide strategic direction and support to the development of education and resources such as high-quality reports, presentations, education, fact sheets, infographics, and other knowledge mobilization products. Responsible for ensuring the performance of the organization’s network and managing system settings align with organizational requirements and user needs.
  4. Facilities Management: Responsible for the overall operations, efficiency and appearance of the RIA building and office. This includes organizing and optimizing office layouts and workspaces to accommodate needs, leading the Joint Health and Safety Committee, overseeing vendor quotes and relations for cleaning, security, repairs, equipment, insurance, renovations, etc., and managing rental agreements and relationships with building tenants.
  5. Budgeting Management: Manage multiple project budgets. Provide regular reporting of expenditures to leadership and funding agencies as required. Responsible for management of spending and ensuring that all spending is in alignment with RIA policies and funder guidelines. Ability to effectively source and work with consultants and vendors to ensure successful outcomes and proactively manage vendor contracts and additional contracts for service providers for activities such as catering, cleaning, parking, security and technology.
  6. Other: Take on additional tasks, activities and special projects, as they arise.

Position Requirements

Education:

University or College degree required. Education or equivalent experience in operations, data, technology or business management preferred.

Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience providing strategic direction and leadership to technology and data management projects in alignment with organizational or funder priorities.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in data infrastructure and technology management.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in leading, motivating and supervising team members in alignment with organizational values and goals.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience managing project budgets.
  • Experience working with and building effective working relationships with partners and vendors.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with in-house and remote teams, external vendors and partners.
  • Highly motivated, detail-oriented individual with the ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet tight deadlines and manage change within a high-demand environment.
  • Experience setting agendas, chairing meetings, and driving collaborative decision-making.
  • Experience procuring and negotiating services and a solid understanding of soft and hard service delivery.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Self-starter with a proactive attitude who can anticipate needs with strong organizational skills.
  • Experience and fluency using Microsoft and Google Workspace products.
  • Fluent in English. Fluency in French is an asset but not required.
  • Must be able to lift or move items that weigh up to 20lbs.
  • Must have a valid driver’s licence and be available for occasional travel.
  • Eligible to obtain a police background/criminal record check.

Scope of Work:

  • Interpersonal Skills: Communicates effectively with internal team members and external partners; professionally represents the RIA in all communications and at events.
  • Level of Responsibility: Responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient implementation of the department in alignment with the RIA’s goals and objectives.
  • Decision-Making Authority: Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the portfolio with support from a director for strategic decisions.
  • Physical and Sensory Demands: Minimal demands, typical of a position operating within an office environment; periods of extensive sitting at a desk and in meetings and concentrated use of visual senses; substantial repetitive keyboard/mouse movement; high sensory demands because of required concentration and attentiveness to detail and regular distractions and interruptions.
  • Working Environment: Much of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position with frequent opportunities to move about. Office is located in a comfortable indoor area. The work is varied and assignments may change frequently. Work will involve regular interaction with RIA team members and external partners and collaborators. There are deadline pressures, while at the same time there is a demand for thoroughness and accuracy. Occasional travel is required.
