Research Projects
Some influences of tribology in resistance spot welding of aluminum alloys
The main objective of the research project is to improve the understanding of electrode degradation mechanisms in resistance spot welding. In particular, the influence on the degradation of the surface characteristics (material, microstructure, roughness and lubricant) of the aluminum sheet where it contacts the electrode is to be examined. Due to the complex nature of the process, an experimental approach is adopted rather than theoretical modeling. The research is divided in three stages:
- resistance spot welding and mechanical testing with different surface conditions
- monitoring all welding with DAQ system to acquire electrical signals for welding parameters
- detailed metallurgical investigation using the modern tools such as SEM, ESCA, etc.
