Double sided arc welding of aluminum

The general trend in automotive structures is towards the use of lighter materials that do not compromise the strength of the vehicle. Tailor welded blanks have been used in automotive applications to reduce weight while maintaining structural integrity. Steel has been the primary material of choice due to cost and familiarity within the automotive industry. Aluminum tailor welded blanks have the opportunity of continuing the trend. However, current manufacturing processes are inadequate for meeting the strict quality and cost criteria of the automotive sector.

This research is studying the application of a relatively new welding process known as double-sided arc welding (DSAW) for use in aluminum welding. In this set up, two plasma arc welding torches are installed in such a way that an arc can pass between them. The aluminum sheet passes through the arc and is welded on both sides.
