Improvement of corrosion and biocompatibility of shape memory alloys (SMA)
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) such as, but not limited to, nitinol, find increasing applications in many industries because of their unique properties. These unique properties include the shape memory effect (SME), pseudo-elasticity (PE), and biocompatibility. A state of the art processing technology, developed by Khan and Zhou at the University of Waterloo, has demonstrated the ability to locally alter the shape memory and pseudoelastic properties of NiTi. Customization of forces at different sections of the wire can be precisely controlled, and this technology has been shown to have great application in linear actuators and micromotors. At the same time, this process has showed improved corrosion resistance through surface homogenization and Ni reduction in preliminary studies and publications. Through a systematic study on biocompatibility of the post-processed NiTi, the confirmation of improved biocompatibility can open the gate way to customization of medical devices.
