Four IC3 members awarded Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Grants

Congratulations to IC3 members, Allison Kelly, Daniel Henstra, Peter Johnson and Warren Dodd, who were awarded funding by Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) to support research that addresses environmental inequality, economic sustainability and Indigenous language revitalization. The projects that received funding include: 

  • Allison Kelly (Psychology): How can an understanding of observational learning promote new ways of increasing self-compassion? ($298,165)
  • Daniel Henstra (Political Science): Effective governance arrangements for climate resilient infrastructure ($378,073)
  • Peter Johnson (Geography and Environmental Management): Who owns the map? Data sovereignty and the shifting government role in spatial data collection, use, and dissemination ($202,050)
  • Warren Dodd (School of Public Health Sciences): Interrogating different pro-poor policy approaches in the context of intersecting social-ecological crises in the Philippines ($178,423)

The researchers were four of twenty-two University of Waterloo projects that received more than $4.4 million for humanities and social sciences research at Waterloo.

Allison Kelly

Associate Professor, Psychology

Allison Kelly studies the roles of shame, self-criticism, and self-compassion in the development, maintenance, and remission of psychopathology, especially eating disorders; Interventions and therapist behaviours that can reduce shame and self-criticism, and increase self-compassion; Fears of self-compassion and outward compassion, and how best to target these barriers in people with eating disorders; The social contexts that facilitate versus undermine self-compassion, compassion for others, healthy body image, and intuitive eating.

Warren Dodd

Assistant Professor, School of Public Health Sciences

Warren Dodd's research interests are in social and ecological determinants of global health and development, migration and health, community food security, healthcare and social service access, and climate change and health.
