A new report by University of Waterloo researchers, Truzaar Dordi and IC3 member Olaf Weber, found that the top 10 most influential actors, including investment advisors, governments, and sovereign wealth funds from around the world, own 49.5 per cent of potential emissions from the world's largest energy firms. Congratulations to IC3 members, David Clausi, Jonathan Li, and Chao Tan, who were elected as Fellows to the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE). Fellows are nominated and elected by their peers in view of their distinguished achievements and career-long service, and are committed to ensuring that Canada’s engineering expertise and experience are applied to the benefit of all Canadians.

Congratulations to IC3 members, Allison Kelly, Daniel Henstra, Peter Johnson and Warren Dodd, who were awarded funding by Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) to support research that addresses environmental inequality, economic sustainability and Indigenous language revitalization.

The World Health Organization (WHO) latest report, Measuring the Climate Resilience of Health Systems, supports efforts to prepare for the health systems challenges posed by climate change. The Water Institute and IC3 welcome 60+ students to the 2022 Summer School “Climate Change and Water Security in Urbanized Watersheds: An Interdisciplinary Perspective.”

Entrepreneur Phil Caravaggio has gifted the Interdisciplinary Centre on Climate Change $240,000 to help share discoveries in climate science.   

Congratulations to the top three winter 2022 Waterloo Experience (WE) Accelerate winning teams: Trees4Seas, Community Solar and Blu-Wave! These teams were awarded $10,000 in prize money for their proposed innovative solutions to climate change issues in core areas identified by IC3. 

On April 27, 2022, IC3’s Executive Director, Sarah Burch, spoke with climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe, who The New York Times called “one of the nation's most effective communicators on climate change.” They discussed climate change communications, strategies for individual and collective action, transition inequities, the role of children and youth, and so much more. They also weighed in on what we’re all wondering – is there hope?

Hope and awareness are crucial ingredients for widespread climate action. Therefore, this Earth Day, IC3 is sharing how three of our members stay motivated to tackle the climate crisis and where they find inspiration in the article Recognizing Earth Day with Hope and Awareness.

Climate change poses significant and increasing risks to water security in urban settings. Addressing this complex challenge requires collaboration and the incorporation of expertise across various disciplines. Starting at the end of May, the University of Waterloo’s Water Institute (WI) and IC3 are advancing these efforts by co-delivering a uniquely designed, three-week virtual summer school, “Climate Change and Water Security in Urbanized Watersheds: An Interdisciplinary Perspective.” The summer school, aimed at graduate students and practitioners, will comprise of daily one hour sessions, Monday to Friday, from May 30 to June 17, 2022.
