Congratulations to the top three winter 2022 Waterloo Experience (WE) Accelerate winning teams: Trees4Seas, Community Solar and Blu-Wave! These teams were awarded $10,000 in prize money for their proposed innovative solutions to climate change issues in core areas identified by IC3.

Hope and awareness are crucial ingredients for widespread climate action. Therefore, this Earth Day, IC3 is sharing how three of our members stay motivated to tackle the climate crisis and where they find inspiration in the article Recognizing Earth Day with Hope and Awareness.
Climate change poses significant and increasing risks to water security in urban settings. Addressing this complex challenge requires collaboration and the incorporation of expertise across various disciplines. Starting at the end of May, the University of Waterloo’s Water Institute (WI) and IC3 are advancing these efforts by co-delivering a uniquely designed, three-week virtual summer school, “Climate Change and Water Security in Urbanized Watersheds: An Interdisciplinary Perspective.” The summer school, aimed at graduate students and practitioners, will comprise of daily one hour sessions, Monday to Friday, from May 30 to June 17, 2022.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has released the third report for its sixth major assessment of the science of climate change; Climate Change 2022: Mitigation of Climate Change. Sarah Burch, Executive Director at IC3 and professor of Geography and Environmental Management, is a lead author for Chapter 17: Accelerating the transition in the context of sustainable development. On March 9, the University of Waterloo's Interdisciplinary Centre on Climate Change hosted an informative discussion on the findings of Health Canada's latest national report, Health of Canadians in a Changing Climate. The lead authors, Peter Berry, Rebekka Schnitter and Paddy Enright, reflected on key insights from the wide-ranging report and highlighted the priority knowledge gaps facing Canadians. This was followed by a Q&A with a panel of Waterloo's climate change and health experts, moderated by Dean of Faculty of Health, Lili Liu. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has released the second report for its sixth major assessment of the science of climate change; Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability. Hannah Tait Neufeld, IC3 member and Assistant Professor, School of Public Health Sciences, is a contributing author for chapter 7. She discusses the impacts to Indigenous Peoples’ health and wellbeing in a changing climate.
A new study co-authored by IC3 member Nandita Basu shows that human-managed streams in Canada and the U.S. have been found to have significantly different flow patterns compared to streams in natural watersheds.
