Changes afoot for the Office of Academic Integrity

The Office of Academic Integrity is undergoing a few changes, according to a notice from Associate Provost, Resources Beth Jewkes.

As a result of shifting portfolios in the senior administration at the University, a decision has been made to adjust the reporting structure of the Office of Academic Integrity. As of July 1, The Office of Academic Integrity will report to Associate Vice President Academic Mario Coniglio and Associate Provost, Graduate Studies Jim Frank.  This arrangement will connect the Office of Academic Integrity with undergraduate and graduate students as well as senior academic leaders for undergraduate and graduate education. Amanda McKenzie will continue her role as the Office Manager.

"Much thought and discussion has gone into these decisions and we are all excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for the Office," says the note from Jewkes.

The Office of Academic Integrity was established in 2008 in response to the recommendations outlined in the report Toward a Level Playing Field: Enhancing Academic Integrity at the University of Waterloo (PDF).

The office is primarily a promotional and educational unit that communicates the importance of academic integrity at the University of Waterloo. It works with faculties, extra-curricular associations, and academic support units to ensure everyone has access to the information and resources necessary to make integrity-aligned decisions.

Questions can be directed to Beth Jewkes, Mario Coniglio, Jim Frank or Amanda McKenzie.

A message from Community Relations and Events.

Canada Day 2014 marked the 30th anniversary of the University of Waterloo’s annual Canada Day Celebration, with more than 60,000 people in attendance, and we’re looking forward to bringing our community together for another exceptional event tomorrow.

The family fun begins at 4 p.m. with on field activations, interactive activities, and live performances by popular Vancouver-based children’s musical duo, Bobs & LoLo. Our young community members won’t want to miss seeing them light up the TVOKids Stage featuring beloved TVOKids host, Gisèle Corinthios.

Outstanding national talent will headline our OpenText Stage this year, with Juno-award winners, The Strumbellas, kicking off the live outdoor concert at 7 p.m., and Canadian rock icon, Kim Mitchell, closing out the show with an electrifying performance starting at 8:30 p.m. followed by our spectacular fireworks display at 10 p.m.

The University of Waterloo Canada Day Celebration offers entertainment for all ages. Join us this July 1 at Columbia Lake Fields and share your national pride with #UWCanadaDay!

Food Services locations that will be shut down include Bon Appétit, Browser's, Brubaker's, CEIT Café, Eye Opener Café, Liquid Assets, Pastry Plus in Needles Hall, Subway in the Student Life Centre, all five main campus Tim Hortons locations, the University Club and William's Fresh Café.

This year's month-long SHAD program starts on Sunday with the arrival of 54 high school students from across Canada. "Waterloo was the first university campus to host this award-winning program in 1983 and remains the flagship program for the host campuses across Canada,” writes Ed Jernigan, SHAD program director and professor in the Department of Knowledge Integration.

SHAD Uncommon Purpose logo.

SHAD is an enrichment program for teenagers with strong interests and potential in sciences, technology, engineering and entrepreneurship and involves as many as 600 high school students each summer. The first week of July will bring the design thinking workshop, after which small groups will work on a design project, including creating a working prototype. Lectures and workshops offered by faculty from across campus, and from interested companies, are also part of the month's agenda.

This is a special year for SHAD Waterloo as the organization celebrates Ed’s 30th and final year as Program Director and the profound impact he has had on SHAD students and program staff.

The SHADs will hold a public open house to show off their achievements on the afternoon of Thursday, July 30, in the Great Hall at Conrad Grebel University College.

Hagey Hall electrical shutdown tomorrow

Plant Operations will be shutting the power off in Hagey Hall on Wednesday, July 1 as electrical work relating to the new infill construction is carried out.

The shutdown will begin in the morning and last throughout the day.

People working in Hagey Hall should shut down their computers in an orderly fashion before leaving their offices today.

Columbia Street construction update (Columbia is open)

The ION-related construction work on Columbia Street West continues this week.

The area from the railway tracks to Hagey Boulevard has reopened for the Canada Day Celebration as of the morning of July 1, allowing access for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.

Sidewalks will be gravel, so use caution in these areas.

Alternate access routes to the University parking lots are from the University Avenue entrance and Hagey Boulevard via Bearinger Road.

This information is subject to change.

Please check the ION-related travel disruption site for more information.

As usual, Columbia Street will be closed between Westmount Road and Hagey Boulevard on July 1 for the Canada Day Celebration. Columbia Street is anticipated to be fully open on Thursday, July 2.
