The Waterloo Innovation Summit kicks off today as top business, academic and policy decision-makers gather in Kitchener and Waterloo to get a taste of what’s in the water in one of the world’s leading innovation ecosystems.

Attendees will hear from influencers, share best practices with enablers, and experience first-hand what it takes to lift a region into global contention as an innovation powerhouse.

Events will be held at the Mike and Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre, the Communitech Hub, the University of Waterloo's Science Teaching Complex, and the Centre for International Governance Innovation.

Pre-registration activities take place at the Delta Waterloo this morning, followed by a guided tour of the Waterloo Region innovation ecosystem, which includes stops at the Faculty of Engineering, the David Johnston Research + Technology Park, the Communitech Hub, the Velocity Garage, Google Canada's R&D office in Kitchener, and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics.

A welcoming reception for registered guests takes place at the Communitech Hub tonight at 6:00 p.m.

Building community at the Maker Expo

The words "Maker Expo" spelled out with balloon sculptures at Kitchener City Hall.

This is the latest in a series of #UWCommunity stories that feature Waterloo in the community.

The University of Waterloo’s maker and entrepreneurial spirit shined bright at Maker Expo on Saturday, September 10. Hosted at Kitchener City Hall, the event brought together a diverse, family-friendly showcase of artists, makers, and hands-on activities featuring select UWaterloo groups and companies, as well as an array of community partners.

The Grobo display at Maker Expo.

As the leading entrepreneurship program at the University of Waterloo, Velocity was proud to exhibit a printer that enables low-cost circuit boards to be prototyped within minutes from Voltera, as well as the latest in app-controlled home gardening with Grobo.

Science Outreach volunteers speak with Maker Expo participants.

Science Outreach sparked curiosity and interest in understanding how things work through a series of interactive demonstrations designed to engage youth in hands-on learning.

Waterloo Unlimited's installation at Maker Expo, a collection of paintings.

The Waterloo Unlimited high school enrichment program encouraged people of all ages to come create and play by helping build our community, literally. Kids and adults alike added their creative and colourful touches to buildings, schools, and houses, contributing to a community-driven collection. Check out all the Waterloo Maker Expo fun with #uwcommunity.
