CECA launches 2016 Annual Report

Co-op banner.

A Note from Peggy Jarvie, Executive Director, Co-operative Education & Career Action

Growth, new records, new milestones and most of all, world-class students. In an ever-changing environment, these are the constants of Waterloo’s co-op and career action programs.

The 2015 fall term saw us achieve an overall co-op employment rate of 99 percent. We followed that with over 7,000 jobs filled in the winter 2016 term. We accomplished both of these feats as the number of students enrolled in co-op approaches the 20,000 mark.

Our Centre for Career Action has been a hub of activity to all Waterloo students, in both the co-op and regular streams. Over the past fiscal year, over 2,900 students took advantage of our individual career advising sessions while over 4,800 accessed drop-in career or co-op consultation services. Behind the scenes, we launched the appropriately-named Career Hub to provide even better online service to our students.

That Herculean effort isn’t possible without the hard work and dedication of our CECA staff and faculty partners. Our team processed over a million co-op job applications last year and close to 60,000 interviews - including 1,425 in a single day.

We don’t sacrifice quality for quantity either. Our students are top notch and have the accolades to prove it. This year, one of them took home the rare co-op “triple crown” by winning the national, provincial and faculty co-op student of the year awards for the contributions they made on their work term. With talent like that, it’s no wonder we attract employers from all over the world to recruit them.

I hope you enjoy the report.

There's still time to give to 2016 United Way campaign

A man rides a plasma car. You know, for charity.

A message from the United Way Campaign.

While the October days of seeing the Dean of Arts racing his colleagues down the hallway on a plasma car are over, and the Advancement team has hung up their Jersday Thursdays jerseys for another year, the University of Waterloo’s United Way campaign is still accepting donations.

We’re at 84 percent of our $265,000 goal and we know that with your support, we’ll hit that goal. You can make a payroll, credit card, cheque or cash donation through the University of Waterloo’s ePledge site. Review our instructions on how to use the new online giving tool.

A Warrior volunteer and King Warrior eat Smile Cookies in the SLC Tim Hortons. While we continue to work towards our $265,000 goal, we are thrilled to announce that the 2016 campaign has seen 101 new donors come on board, helping us surpass our goal of recruiting 75 new donors to the campaign’s 75th anniversary. And the support of groups across campus has been fantastic. Just one example: the Smile Cookie drive organized by Food Services at their Tim Hortons locations brought in over $2,500! Thank you!

Why donate? The University’s United Way campaign supports local agencies that could help a colleague find the source of their stress and learn how to handle it better, or give a student the chance to gather self-esteem and reach their full potential. When we support our community, we all benefit.

Whether you’ve already made a donation, or are thinking of making a donation, we sincerely thank you.
