Welcome back to campus for 2020

And we're back!

Campus will begin to rise from its long winter's nap, but the thaw will be slow going as Winter term lectures won't commence until Monday, January 6.

Food Services locations reopening today include:

  • Mudies, V1 - 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Starbucks, STC - 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
  • Tim Hortons SLC  - 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Tim Hortons SCH - 7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

All other locations will be back to business as usual on Monday, January 6. East End Café in EC5 will not be re-opening in January as Food Services is renovating to better serve the campus community. It closed for good as of Saturday, December 21. Check the hours and locations page for more details.

All Print + Retail Solutions locations have resumed regular hours as of 9:00 a.m. today.

The Centre in Needles Hall has opened today as well for those students who are back on campus ahead of the start of term, and beginning Monday, January 6 for the first three weeks of term, it will be open 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, to assist students with their start-of-term needs. 

The Physical Activities Complex and CIF are open today. Check the Athletics website for more details.

The Dana Porter and Davis Centre libraries will be open today from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for intersession hours, and on the weekend from noon to 5:00 p.m.

The Library will be open for intersession hours between January 2 and January 6, with Dana Porter open Wednesday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m. The Davis Centre will be open from Wednesday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m. Regular hours commence on Monday, January 6. Check the Library's website for full hours and location information.

Feds Used Books will open on Saturday, January 4 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday, January 5 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Several other businesses in the Student Life Centre, including CIBC, SOS Physiotherapy and the Student Health Pharmacy, are back open today. Campus Dentist will resume regular hours on Monday, January 6.  

Interim Engineering Dean begins term

Professor Rick Culham.Professor J. Richard (Rick) Culham has taken on the position of interim Dean of Engineering as of January 1, 2020.

Professor Culham is an extremely well-respected member of the engineering faculty for his knowledge, style and collaborative approaches to working. He is well positioned to continue the important work of the faculty having previously served as acting dean and is currently associate dean, administration.

Professor Culham—a University of Waterloo alumnus—is a founding member of the Microelectronics Heat Transfer Laboratory, a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a member of the American Society for Engineering Education and a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario.

In recognition of outstanding teaching and commitment to the enrichment of Waterloo Engineering education, the Faculty awarded Professor Culham a Teaching Excellence Award in 2009. In 2010 the University appointed him as a University Research Chair in recognition of exceptional achievement and pre-eminence in the field of heat transfer.

Culham succeeds Professor Sullivan, who stepped down from the position on December 31.

Culham will serve in the role until June 30, 2020 or until such time as a new dean is appointed through the search process that is currently underway.
