The Warriors Women's hockey team are OUA champions

The Warriors women's hockey team pose for a group photo on the ice with their medals.

This is an excerpt of an article originally published on the Athletics website.

Everyone in the rink thought Carly Orth was going to shoot.

With the McCaw Cup final deadlocked at 1-1 through 60 minutes of regulation and 8-plus minutes of sudden-death overtime, the Waterloo Warriors forward used her deft backchecking skills and her long reach to swipe the puck just inside the Toronto Varsity Blues zone. As Orth pivoted on a dime and barrelled towards the Toronto net, linemate Paige Rynne stayed a stride behind. "I was hanging back," said Rynne, who was trying to open up for a possible rebound, or maybe a drop pass. "But then I saw her taking it wide, so I just tried to get around their D."

Nutrition Month Profile: Nicole Pin

Nicole Pin holds a planter.During the month of March, Registered Dietitians (RD) across the country come together to celebrate the diverse field of nutrition and to help Canadians build knowledge and understanding of the connections between food, nutrition, and health.

What better time of year to highlight the unique and varied RD roles that are present right here on the UW campus? Join us in celebrating the important ways that our RDs are contributing to the health and wellness of our students, staff, and community at large. We are continuing our series highlighting some of the talented RDs from across our campus with our second profile: Nicole Pin, Registered Dietitian with Food Services.

Name: Nicole Pin, M.AN, RD

Position at UWaterloo: Registered Dietitian with the Food Services Team

Describe your role on campus: In my role I work closely with our culinary, operations and communications teams in food services to promote nutritional wellness in our menus, events, media, and overall campus presence. I also collaborate with numerous departments including Campus Wellness, Housing, and Sustainability on larger projects targeted at wellbeing for the University of Waterloo.

If you could tell people one thing about nutrition, what would it be? Our relationship with food is integral to nutrition and wellness. Relationships with food can be complex; they are individual, dynamic, and continue to change over time. Be curious when it comes to nutrition, but don’t believe everything you see or hear. Focus on the aspects of food that bring you joy, demonstrate self-respect in your meal experiences, and engage in social experiences around food.

What do you like to do in your spare time? In my spare time I love to travel! I’ve made it a long-term goal to visit at least one new place annually (so far no regrets!). I also enjoy reading and practicing yoga.

Better to burn out than fade away: Theatre and Performance program presents IMMOLATION

Immolation banner featuring a silhouette of a person with arms outstretched as flames burn against a ruined cityscape.

The Theatre and Performance program in the Drama and Communication Arts department is preparing their latest production, IMMOLATION.

"IMMOLATION is an artistic and powerfully devised piece on rebellion and freedom split into four movements," says a statement from the Faculty of Arts. "Inspired by the stories of real freedom fighters, the ensemble aspires to delve into the nuances of their own interpretations of freedom. Loosely inspired by the theme of decolonization, director Pam Patel aims to delve into how these characters are shaped by their stories and how they interact together."

Immolation stage crew kneel down to consult file cards spread out on the floor of the stage at the Theatre of the Arts.

"During this experience the characters find themselves exploring a myriad of intricate and nuanced subjects, such as class distinctions, status quo, rebellion, safe spaces, the struggles faced by the trans community, and matriarchy, all set against the broader backdrop of the pursuit of freedom. At its core Immolation is about finding out what freedom is. There are costs to freedom, scars we gain and sometimes we lose ourselves for it. Come explore what freedom means to you and join the fight."

Before the show, attendees are encouraged to participate in the interactive engagement area. Doors will be open 30 minutes prior to the performance.

Opening night is Wednesday, March 20. All performances take place in the Theatre of the Arts in the Modern Languages Building. The performance runs evenings from Wednesday, March 20 to Saturday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m., with an afternoon matinee at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 22 as well. Tickets are $15 (general), $10 (students), and $5 (high school students).
