A message from the Office of the Vice-President, Research and International.
Are you a researcher interested in improving the EDI requirements of the Discovery Grant process? Then this workshop is for you. Developing a great first draft is a great place to start. Let’s make it as strong as possible!
The Inclusive Research Team within the University of Waterloo’s Office of the Vice-President Research and International leads the ongoing commitment to supporting faculty members in building their competencies related to embedding equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) practices and Indigenous Relations in their teams and research.
We are hosting a two-part series on supporting both experienced and early career researchers in the EDI planning and implementation of the NSERC Discovery Grant. This session will be facilitated by Nicole Kaniki, PhD.
*Please note that attendance at Part 1 is required to be eligible to attend Part 2.
These sessions will take a deep dive into the sections of the Discovery Grant with EDI requirements by supporting writing, application and reporting on equity, diversity and inclusion in research practice with a focus on the “Highly Qualified Professionals (HQPs) Training Plan” and “Past contributions to the training of highly qualified personnel (HQP)” sections of the grant while ensuring alignment with the Discovery Grant merit indicators. The sessions will support both foundations and context of the EDI requirements as well as to support the actual writing process.
A link to Part 1, which will be hosted on Zoom, will be sent to registrants closer to the date. Registration for Part 2 will open after the completion of Part 1.
Please note: There is limited space available for the in-person workshop in Part 2, and we will be accepting registrants on a first-come, first-served basis once you have attended Part 1. There may be future opportunities to participate in similar sessions in the future.
For more information or questions, please reach out to research.equity@uwaterloo.ca.

The Winter 2024 Velocity Pitch Competition saw a big turnout, attracting more than 100 student applications from campus. Narrowing down from a competitive initial pool, 26 teams emerged to compete in the semi-finals, leading to the final showdown of eight standout finalists.
On April 4, the University community rallied around the final teams, vying for more than $20,000 in grants through a fierce pitch competition. The startups — Automax Ai, CELLECT., Grease Tech, NewGen Health, OrthoFlexion, PatientCompanion, SheepIt and Wygo — each delivered a three-minute pitch of their business ideas to a panel of distinguished judges in front of a live audience.
Through programs like these, Velocity is transforming the way businesses are built by creating resources, building community and breaking down barriers for founders to bring to market solutions that address cross-disciplinary challenges.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg, and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within the Office of Indigenous Relations.
