Tony Munro retires after a distinguished career in international education

A message from Marketing & Undergraduate Recruitment (MUR).
After more than three decades of supporting students through their post-secondary journey at Waterloo, Tony Munro, Manager of International Recruitment & Partnerships, has announced that he will retire in fall 2025.
Tony’s career spans nearly 33 years of service at Waterloo. Known for his expertise in global student recruitment and international strategy, Tony has been a trusted voice and ambassador for Canadian higher education across the globe.
He joined the University of Waterloo in 1993 as a co-op coordinator, developing employment opportunities for students and monitoring their success through on-site visits. He focused on the job market outside of North America and built awareness of the complexities of international student experiences.
In 2012, Tony brought his talent and knowledge to Marketing & Undergraduate Recruitment, where he led international outreach and recruitment initiatives. His efforts helped to diversify Waterloo’s student population and expand its presence in key global markets, reinforcing its status as a leader in innovation and research.
During his time at Waterloo, Tony contributed significantly to international growth strategies, both strategically and on the ground in many countries around the world. His leadership and genuine care for students consistently translated into increased international enrollment and stronger institutional partnerships abroad.
Throughout his career, Tony has been widely respected not only for his strategic insight but also for his mentorship, generosity, humour, and commitment to his team. Tony says that this optimistic attitude has been an asset on the road. “My sense of humour and extroverted personality gets me through many ‘interesting’ situations,” he says. “It helps me to assimilate even when situations change rapidly, and norms change from minute to minute.”
Tony’s departure marks the end of an era for international recruitment at Waterloo, but his impact will continue to resonate through the partnerships and programs he helped build. Colleagues wishing to celebrate with Tony are invited to a farewell event on Tuesday, August 26 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Needles Hall (room 2001).
