Dr. John T.W. Yeow, professor, Department of Systems Design Engineering

A Waterloo Engineering professor has been elected to a senior leadership role with an international council that advances research, education and industrial applications in nanotechnology.

Dr. John T.W. Yeow, a professor in the Department of Systems Design Engineering, was elected president-elect of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Nanotechnology Technical Council (NTC) in early July 2026, at the council's annual meeting held in Nanjing, China. Yeow will serve a one-year term as president-elect in 2027, followed by a two-year term as president in 2028 and 2029.

A Canada Research Chair in Micro and Nanodevices from 2009 to 2019, Yeow has held a University Research Chair since and directs the Advanced Micro and Nanodevice Lab at Waterloo, where his research includes miniaturized imaging catheters and radiation sensors that support the early detection and treatment of diseases such as cancer. He previously served as the IEEE NTC's vice-president of conferences, vice-president of educational activities and Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Nanotechnology Magazine.

"I am deeply honoured to be elected by my peers to lead IEEE NTC," Yeow said. "This position will allow me to promote engineering education of young people and community building for early career professionals in Africa and South America. One of my initiatives is to fund seasonal schools and workshops that focus on student engagement and bring IEEE conferences to these under-represented regions."

Congratulations to team G-00SE, whose project “Ariadne” won the 2026 Airbus Fly Your Ideas Challenge. The interdisciplinary five-person team consists of Manya Singla (Computer Science); Mahati Tadepalli (Computer Science/Business Administration); Norah Miriam Shibu (Computer Science); Manasa Srivatsan (Geography and Aviation) and Aaisha Pathan (Computer Science).

The annual Fly Your Ideas Challenge is “designed to inspire the next generation to pioneer sustainable aerospace and shape a safer, more connected world.” University students submit proposals to Airbus and then work directly with industry experts to solve real-life challenges.

“Seeing the all-female, 100 per cent Canadian team Ariadne win Fly Your Ideas 2026 is truly inspiring. It speaks to the exceptional talent coming out of Canadian universities while celebrating both diversity and academic excellence”, says Katia Bédard, Head of Talent Acquisition and Employer Marketing for Airbus in Canada. “Our partnership with the University of Waterloo — spanning both recruitment and R&D — allows us to build genuine pathways for the bold minds who will shape the future of our industry.”

More than 1,900 students from 60 countries competed in the contest over several months, with the winners being chosen to attend the Farnborough International Airshow from July 20 to 24 in the United Kingdom. The three finalist teams are all offered exclusive internship opportunities with Airbus as well.
