From May 12 to 23, 2025, Philippe Van Cappellen and Fereidoun Rezanezhad will offer EARTH 652: Reactive Transport Modelling at the University of Waterloo.
This course is designed for graduate students and professionals with a background in (geo)chemistry and environmental transport processes, plus a working knowledge of partial differential equations (PDEs).
In this 2-week intensive course, we review the unifying concepts and mathematical representations of reactive transport modeling. Focus is on coupling biogeochemical reactions to transport processes in surface and near-surface environments (e.g., lakes, soils, sediments, tailings ponds, shallow aquifers). Students learn how to conceptualize, solve, and use reactive transport models (RTMs). They write their own numerical codes and are introduced to existing RTM tools.
