Watershed Model Building

Dr. Bryan TolsonBy Dr. Bryan A. Tolson, Associate Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Waterloo

Abstract

This two-part talk will first detail the construction of a SWAT2000 model for simulating flow, sediment and phosphorus loading into the Cannonsville Reservoir in New York State.  Phosphorus data sources, mass balance issues, model prediction quality and then the use of the calibrated model for assessing alternative phosphorus management scenarios will be presented.  The second part of the talk will briefly overview some of my research group’s work developing advanced methods for watershed or environmental simulation model building.  Our methods are unique because they are designed to address the extreme computational expense associated with building distributed watershed or environmental simulation models.  Methods include new algorithms for optimizing the agreement between measured data and model predictions and methods for predicting the uncertainty in model predictions.
