This article highlights common misconceptions, practical advice, and freely available tools and training opportunities provided by organizations such as Global Water Futures, The Gordon Foundation DataStream, and Compute Canada, among others, to support water science researchers. The ten best practices proposed (https://doi.org/10.1002/hyp.14385) may be adopted and adapted globally to improve data management in the natural sciences. Water science data is a valuable asset that supports the original research and inspires new research questions. With complex water issues facing Canada and the world, there is a growing consensus on making data more accessible.
