A new review paper, Submarine groundwater discharge from tropical islands, has been published in Grundwasser by Hans Dürr in collaboration with international colleagues Dr. Nils Moosdorf (University of Hamburg), Dr. Thomas Stieglitz (Bernstein Center Freiburg), Dr. Hannelore Waska (University of Oldenburg) and Dr. Jens Hartmann (University of Hamburg).
This study presents an extensive review on the role of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) on coastal waters surrounding tropical islands. The magnitude of this land-ocean water flux significantly influences coastal ecosystem functionality through nutrient discharge. The results suggest that nutrients associated with SGD represent an important pathway, compared to river discharge in tropical islands. Moreover, the ratio between island land area and coastal length was shown to approximate the relative importance of SGD vs. river output; a relationship which can assist in the identification of key sites for future SGD investigation.
