Adrian Mellage, a PhD student in the Ecohydrology Research Group, has completed a successful two-month research exchange at Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel. The exchange was part of an ongoing research collaboration between the Ecohydrology Research Group at the University of Waterloo and the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Technion.
Through this exchange Adrian worked closely with his co-advisor, Dr. Alex Furman, at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Technion and furthered his research, as he explains:
While at Technion I was able to tap into Dr. Furman’s Soil Physics and Hydro-geophysics Research Group’s expertise on fitting numerical models to geophysical datasets. The bulk of my time there was spent working closely with Dr. Furman, developing an unsaturated flow and transport model to validate our conceptual understanding of experimental results pertaining to fluctuating water table environments.
During his stay, Adrian visited the research group’s laboratory facilities and assisted them in designing column experiments, similar to those developed at the Ecohydrology Research Group. He also helped to setup new geophysical measurement equipment - equipment used in the Ecohydrology Laboratory.
Overall, the exchange was found to be productive and the researchers and staff at Technion, along with all the members of Dr. Furman’s work group, were very attentive and helpful, making the visit a very enjoyable and valuable experience.
Welcome back, Adrian!
