Who is the farmer?
- Jihong worked for other organic farm companies before, and he decided to establish his own farm later on.
- He also has an agricultural-related bachelor degree from Nanjing Agricultural University, which lies the ground for him to conduct organic farming.
Farm operations:
- Jihong divided the farmland he leased from farmers into dozens of small pieces for his members to rent. By adopting a piece of the land, the customers can either choose to grow food on it by themselves, supported by Jihong’s team, or to let Jihong’s team plant vegetables for them.
- Besides, Jihong also provided many vegetable pots for customers to bring back and grow at home.
- Jihong believes that lack of understandings of organic farming is the reason that consumers are picky. For example, because he doesn’t apply synthetic fertilizer, some vegetables are not that bright in color. One of his customers is suspicious of the food quality. So he invited the customers to the farm and explained the problem.
- Jihong finds that the high delivery cost and food waste are main problems that he should look at.
Anecdote:
Once Jihong heard from a Buddhist that insects will listen to the Buddhist scriptures and stop oviposition. He tried to play records of Buddhist scriptures near the plants, and many insects did stop laying eggs.
