Meet our teaching and learning champions (TLCs)
The Associate Dean, Teaching & Student Experience, in collaboration with the following faculty members, play a vital role in advancing teaching and learning outcomes across all academic units within the Faculty of Engineering, while contributing expertise, innovation, and leadership to enhance the overall student learning experience.
Dr. Carolyn MacGregor is Associate Dean, Teaching & Student Experience in Engineering and Associate Professor of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Her work spans human factors, usability, and virtual environments, including 3D navigation and haptic devices. She teaches user-centred design, research methods, and cognitive ergonomics, integrating engineering and psychology in practice.
Rick earned his B.Arch. from Waterloo in 1984. His award-winning design work with Toronto firms includes a Governor General’s Medal in Architecture. He has taught design studios and courses in landscape theory. His research focuses on Canadian architecture, landscape history and theory, contemporary landscape design, and building–land relationships and land art.
Andrea Atkins is an Assistant Professor (Teaching Stream) in Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Waterloo, supporting Architectural Engineering. With five years in structural building design, she has taught at Waterloo and the University of Toronto. She focuses on teaching and does not supervise graduate research or postdoctoral fellows.
Eline Boghaert is a Lecturer in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Waterloo. Her current research interests focus on engineering education and studying how students learn, to improve teaching and learning at the University of Waterloo.
Christopher Holt is a former consultant and entrepreneur with experience across technology, media, and finance. He holds a PhD from OISE at the University of Toronto, researching entrepreneurship education. He has advised global organizations and teaches entrepreneurship, consulting, and organizational behaviour while supervising the MBET Corporate Innovation Project.
Ayman El-Hag is an Associate Professor (Teaching Stream) in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo. He specializes in condition monitoring of electrical insulation, has secured major research funding, published extensively, and contributes to IEEE committees, editorial roles, and standards development in high-voltage engineering.
Carol Hulls is Associate Chair Teaching and Associate Professor (Teaching Stream) in Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo. She advances teaching through faculty mentorship and innovation, has taught programming and hardware since 1999, and received a 2016 Brightspace Innovation Award.
Oliver Schneider researches Human-Computer Interaction and haptics, advancing Haptic Computing. His work develops tools for scalable creation, deployment, and study of touch-based feedback, addressing key system gaps to move haptic technologies beyond lab settings into real-world and commercial applications.
James Tung work spans assistive technology, rehabilitation engineering, robotics, and IoT. He teaches biomedical and mechatronics courses and supervises graduate students, focusing on innovative solutions for healthcare, connectivity, and neuromotor systems.
