Rob de Loë
Biography
Rob de Loë is Associate Dean, Research, for the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo, and a Professor in the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. He’s been a passionate water researcher for nearly four decades. Rob spent most of his career studying how we can do a better job of protecting and managing water resources and responding to new threats and pressures such as climate change. Starting in 2020, he wound up his water governance research program and started in a new direction that explores how art and science can be brought together through photography to help people better understand water challenges.

Scholarly Research
My current research program explores how photographs can be used as boundary objects to build understanding around challenging science and policy questions in the environmental domain. This work involved two interrelated activities: (1) Scholarly research on strategies for bridging art and science; integrating art into public engagement programs relating to environmental sustainability; and the ways in which photography has been, and can be, used to deepen understanding around challenging environmental sustainability questions. (2) Photographic practice relating to environmental sustainability challenges.
