Dr. Brandon Van Huizen is a Post-Doctoral Fellow within the Wetland Ecology and Conservation Lab. Brandon is a doctoral graduate from Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Waterloo where he studied the cold season ecohydrology of a boreal peatland and modelling.
His current research broadly focuses on the interaction of water and climate and the implications for conservation and restoration post disturbance. This work includes projects understanding post-mining impacts on peatland ecohydrology, wildfire impacts on peatland freeze/thaw dynamics, and energy flux dynamics of the Canadian Shield and its implications for species at risk habitat. Currently, Brandon is leading a large-scale landscape mapping of critical habitat for species at risk using GIS and remote sensing techniques, as part of a multi-disciplinary team that is generating highly detailed, habitat and landscape mapping for conservation planning.
